The circular grid
Solar module recycling in the US still lacks scale. Most cells go to specialized recyclers or, worse, landfills. Modules that come off a 25-year-warranty rooftop or repower project still produce 75-85% of nameplate output. Reusing them in second-life utility installations, agrivoltaic projects, or developing-market markets extends useful life by another 10-20 years at a fraction of the embedded carbon of a new module.
EnergyBin and others already serve the C&I and residential secondary market well at the kilowatt scale. Refound's wedge is different: utility-scale MW-block trading: where a developer with 4 MW of leftover modules from a downsized project needs to find a buyer who can take the whole pallet stack as a coherent procurement, not break it up across 200 small buyers. That requires logistics integration, freight quoting on shipping-pallet quantities, and spec-faceted search at the lot level.
Inverters and trackers are also early candidates for reuse: central inverters carry 20-25 year design lives, and tracker mechanisms can outlive the modules they support. For developers, utilities, and IPPs writing the next century of solar portfolio strategy, secondary-market sourcing is moving from corner-case to core procurement option.

MW-block trading: project-surplus pallet stacks, repower removals, and OEM excess inventory in lot sizes from roughly 500 kW to 50 MW. Refound is not for residential or single-pallet C&I trades — those markets are well-served elsewhere. The cutoff is whatever a procurement engineer treats as a coherent project line item.
Flash test should be per-pallet at minimum, with mean degradation reported against nameplate Pmax. Modules pulled from operating projects typically run 2-7% degradation depending on age and climate. Watch for outlier modules within a pallet — high standard deviation across a single pallet often signals a lightning strike, transport damage, or a manufacturing-batch issue worth pricing in.
Potential-induced degradation can knock 10-30% off nameplate output if modules sat for years in a high-voltage string with grounding asymmetry. Flash test alone won't always catch it. Ask for IEC 62804 PID-resistance certification on the original module, plus a recovered-from-PID test if the modules came off a known-issue project. Reputable repower contractors will have this data.
Modern central inverters carry 20-25 year design lives and the major capital cost is the cabinet plus IGBTs. A 1-MW central with 8-10 years of service and a documented IGBT replacement is often a strong value buy at 30-50% of new cost. Avoid units with fluid-cooled designs that have leaked, and confirm the controller firmware can be updated to current grid-support requirements (UL 1741-SB for post-2022 interconnections).
Roughly 1.6 MW of standard 550W modules fits on 18 standard truckloads (≈ 90 pallets). Refound's freight quotes account for tracker-paired bifacial weights and the per-pallet handling for partial loads. For deliveries inside 500 mi of supply, FOB origin with the buyer's freight broker is typically cheapest; longer distances often favor seller-arranged dedicated freight.
OEM model number and revision, install date, soils/wind data from the original project (tracker bearings are sized to site-specific wind class), torque-tube length and section count, and any service history on motor units or controllers. For Nextracker and Array Technologies systems, also confirm the firmware is upgradeable to current self-powered or NX Horizon control schemes.
When Refound's solar catalog goes live (2026-2027 phased rollout), it'll be built for utility-scale procurement. Not residential.
